For the past two weeks, we were visiting Chennai, in the state of Tamil Nadu. It’s located on the Coromandel Coast off the Bay of Bengal and it’s one of the biggest cities in India. I have been there many times before and also lived there for three months in 2012, when my boyfriend was working there. He is still doing business in Chennai so we can enjoy the city regularly. The difference in ambience is huge compared to Delhi, from where we usually take a flight to come here. The first thing that hits you stepping off the plane is the humidity and heat. It’s always hot here (at least on my standards) but the air is much clearer here than in Delhi. I love the sea breeze, the lush greenery and the beachy feel of this place. In spite of our busy schedule, we always try to spend some time by the beach as it’s super beautiful there.
We usually spend a lot of time in hotels, preferably near the airport. Hilton and ITC Grand Chola are the best according to me, super luxurious, and the service level everywhere here never stops to amaze me. I especially like the Hilton hotel for its rooftop terrace above the whole city. The view is amazing and it has an infinity pool and a cool ambience of the Q Bar. There are big parties on the weekend with great DJ’s, and on every wednesday & friday they host a ladies’ night, with free drinks for the ladies.
What I love most about india, is the FOOD of course! No matter where you go, you can count on the taste of food and the amazing variety of it. I absolutely love it, more than I like Finnish cuisine or any other. In the South I always eat a lot of seafood, as Chennai is located close to the sea, it’s fresh and unique. Also the fruits are incredible here. I like South Indian breakfast dishes very much; dosa, uttapam, idli, vada, you name it :D. Today I tried uttapam for the first time and it was lovely.
Ok, this is turning into a food blog now… But one thing I really miss here is filter coffee from my Moccamaster coffee machine in Finland! They really don’t know how to make good coffee here in India. I keep having these headaches due to my caffeine withdraval 😀 Have to drag that machine here one way or another! One day I ordered an ice latte and they brought me black coffee with ice :O. In Cafe Coffee Day, Costa Coffee and Starbucks are good places to get “normal” coffee.
This was definitely not my last time in Chennai and I’ll keep coming back surely. Now I’m visiting Singapore for the first time in my life and will surely post about it later 🙂
